Dr. Horvath has provided professional engineering services related to continuing education for design professionals and others involved in engineered construction since 1977. His clients have been located worldwide and include consulting engineering firms, government agencies, professional and technical organizations, academic institutions, and manufacturing industry. He has provided a wide range of instruction ranging from brief presentations to multi-day short courses, with the content and focus of each presentation always tailored to meet the needs of the client, audience, and geographic area of interest. He is also well- known for always providing written notes for every presentation he makes so that participants have a lasting benefit from the presentation. In addition, Dr. Horvath has extensive experience in traditional college/university classroom education. He is currently a tenured full professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department of Manhattan College in New York City. Details are available in Dr. Horvath's curriculum vitae which is available to clients and prospective clients upon request.
Summary of experience in continuing education...
Providing continuing education instruction to both engineering practitioners and non-engineering executives involved in the construction industry has long been an interest and activity of Dr. Horvath as a logical outgrowth and extension of his traditional classroom course-work teaching in academia. He is best known for conceiving, developing, and being the sole instructor for a two-day continuing education workshop titled "Designing with Cellular Geosynthetics (Geofoams and Geocombs)" that was the first of its kind in the world. It was given at several locations throughout the United States under the auspices of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) in collaboration with various industry co-sponsors as well as through various businesses and government agencies. Special one- and partial-day versions of this workshop have also been developed and given on behalf of various industry and government agency clients in the United States as well as in Argentina, Canada, Chile, Japan, and Uruguay.
To reach even a broader audience, in 2001 Dr. Horvath developed an abstracted version of these workshops as a digital slide presentation with supporting narration text that was made available commercially on a CD-ROM together with an original hardcopy of his monograph "Geofoam Geosynthetic". Digital copies of the slide presentation and narration text only were made available to academic institutions on a gratis basis in 2005 through the auspices of the now-defunct Manhattan College Center for Geotechnology. These slide and narration text files can now be downloaded from this website. Please note this is done solely as a professional courtesy and no warranty is expressed or implied for their use, nor will any technical support be provided for these files or their content. Furthermore, "Geofoam Geosynthetic" is now out of print so is no longer available as a reference document.
Dr. Horvath has also always had an interest in continuing education involving the broader aspects of geotechnical engineering. In recent years he became actively involved in the delivery of continuing education to licensed professional engineers because of the increasing demand for such educational products as a requirement for continued professional engineering registration. In addition, Dr. Horvath currently has projects involving both on-line courses and webinars in various stages of technical and business development.
Current continuing-education offerings...
While Dr. Horvath's continuing-education presentations are always tailored to meet the specific needs of a client he does have several short courses that have already been developed and are available on relatively short notice for adaptation to specific needs and presentation based on his personal availability. The following courses are currently available or are under active development (note that one- and two-day offerings can be broken up over multiple partial days if desired):
"An Overview of Geotechnology and Its Use in Heavy Construction" [one day]
"Geotechnical Engineering Failures and Lessons Learned" [half-day]
"Fundamentals of Ground Modification Techniques for Earthworks" [half-day]
"Designing with Cellular Geosynthetics (Geofoams and Geocombs)" [two days]
"Designing Lightweight Fills Using EPS Geofoam" [half-day]
"Get In, Get Out, and Stay Out with EPS Geofoam...Accelerated Construction Using a Market-Ready Technology - Some Basics for Transportation-Related Applications" [one hour]
"Lateral Earth Pressure Reduction Using EPS Geofoam and Related Materials" (under development) [one day]
